Renowned for delivering the state’s most iconic stadiums such as Suncorp Stadium and Queensland Country Bank Stadium, BESIX Watpac is reinforcing its reputation as a leader in world-class sporting infrastructure through the delivery of this remarkable 30,000 seating capacity, fully covered stadium.

On track and on budget, the project will open in April 2026 with its first event – the Super Rugby Super Round on ANZAC weekend – featuring the Queensland Reds, New South Wales Waratahs and ACT Brumbies.

Mark Baker, BESIX Watpac Chief Executive Officer said: “We have unrivalled stadia expertise and have never missed an opening. Having delivered every major stadium in Queensland, our experience combined with deep local networks, a passionate team of experts and strong collaborative partnerships, have been critical to the success of One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha.”

“Driving this has been our focus on productivity, which is front of mind on every project we deliver. Through collaborative partnerships and the use of advanced digital construction methods, we’ve enhanced the way we work. These approaches, together with our stadium expertise, have been essential to keeping this complex project on schedule.”

Mr Baker continued: “Queensland is no stranger to world-class sporting events. As the Rugby League World Cup fast approaches, I’ll be proud to see four BESIX Watpac-delivered stadiums hosting matches – including Queensland’s Cbus Super Stadium, Queensland Country Bank Stadium and Suncorp Stadium, where the men’s and women’s Grand Finals will be played.”

Looking ahead to Brisbane 2032 and beyond, Mr Baker said: “We’re excited at the prospect of playing a key role in showing off Queensland to the world. We want to be part of that legacy.”

“Our work in Christchurch demonstrates our capability to deliver major public infrastructure to the highest global benchmarks. This is all while creating a strong local legacy through our commitment to stronger communities.”

One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha is set to become a major venue on the international sporting and event map. The stadium features a fully covered design with a natural turf field-of-play, supported by advanced technology to ensure elite playing conditions.

Christchurch City Council Senior Project Manager Richard Gibbs is a turf specialist who has overseen the turf development project over the last nine years.

“This is very much the green icing on the cake. It’s a real achievement to have got this far,” says Dr Gibbs.

The Council’s Parks unit will maintain the turf into the future, using the latest technology to keep it in top condition.

“In addition to the reinforced turf, there are ten misting fans that’ll be keeping the surface cool in summer and keeping the air circulating. There will also be a system that’s under the pitch that can blow air through the profile, keep oxygen levels up and then the final component is the artificial lighting rigs which provide supplementary light when required,” says Dr Gibbs.

The One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha project continues to deliver strong local engagement, with 92% of workers and 77% of businesses engaged from the South Island, more than 90 trainees and apprentices involved, and over 450 Māori workers contributing to the build – exemplifying the company’s commitment to building enduring legacies everywhere they operate.
