Preparing a landmark to show the world

Having already completed the 2003 renovation of the Khalifa Stadium for the 2006 Asian Games, BESIX was once again engaged to renovate the stadium for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The refurbishment and expansion included delivery of state-of-the-art services and facilities, as well as a sports museum, in order to make it one of the most cutting-edge sporting venues in the world. A major focus for the redevelopment was to preserve the stadium’s spirit while bringing it up to FIFA standards. These included completely refurbishing the external shell including a 44,000 square metre membrane roofing structure, as well as installing 11,500 new seats. Daily collaboration with the client along with precise coordination enabled the project to be delivered on time with minimal disruption to the stadium’s operations, without interrupting events taking place at the venue.
