Te Kaha achieves one million construction hours
Celebrating a momentous milestone at Te Kaha, Canterbury's Multi-Use Arena
Led by builder BESIX Watpac, Te Kaha, Canterbury’s Multi-Use Arena (also known as One New Zealand Stadium) has recently celebrated a momentous milestone with the project achieving one million hours of construction.
BESIX Watpac Project Director Adrian Jones says the accomplishment is thanks to the more than 350 people currently on site on delivery the project for client Christchurch City Council.
"Reaching this milestone is a testament to our people and the planning, collaboration, and safety culture we have fostered on the project," Mr Jones said.
“Our first project in New Zealand has been a remarkable journey, marked by strong relationships and successful partnerships with Christchurch City Council and our locally based delivery partners.”
Rising above the arena will be the oculus. This structure will provide the frame for the roof, which will be made of steel and a clear material called Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE).
Upcoming works include installing the first oculus module with the first of the oculus trusses already in place. The oculus will be installed in three stages. This involves four trusses and 12 lifts ranging from 120 to 180 tonne lifts. Each set takes about a month, with the entire process expected to be completed over four months.
The project is on track to open in April 2026.
