The project claimed the top honour for Excellence in Innovation, celebrating its groundbreaking design, cutting-edge construction, and thoughtful long-term maintenance strategy. Its success didn’t stop there, with the bridge also named a finalist for ‘Best Structure over 35 metres’.

It also took top honours at the Australian Institute of Architects Queensland Awards, receiving the Queensland Architecture Medal, The Karl Langer Award for Urban Design, and the Sustainability Award.

This follows its recent win of the Infrastructure Award at the Queensland Landscape Architecture Awards the week before, as well as receiving the Large Projects Queensland Award at the Australian Steel Institute Awards in 2024.

Holding the title as Australia’s longest single-mast, cable-stayed bridge, Kangaroo Point Bridge was delivered through a collaborative partnership between Brisbane City Council and BESIX Watpac – leading the Connect Brisbane Consortium.

“Kangaroo Point Bridge is a reflection of what can be achieved through strong collaboration, open communication and having the right team in place,” BESIX Watpac General Manager – Qld, NT and NZ Wade Cummins said.

“We’re proud of the partnership we’ve built with Brisbane City Council to bring this transformative project to life. Delivering excellence in a highly public environment required close alignment across all stakeholders.”

“This award not only acknowledges the strength of our partnership and deeply connected subcontractor network, but also the expertise of our team and in-house capabilities enabling us to expertly manage complexity, reduce risk, and deliver with certainty.”

The bridge has already seen over one million crossings—a powerful reflection of its central role in Brisbane’s transport network and its transformative link between the CBD and eastern suburbs. Supporting up to 10,000 pedestrian and cyclist trips daily, it’s expected to reduce car travel across the river by 84,000 trips annually.

The structure exemplifies leading-edge innovation in design and construction through the use of prefabricated steel modules, custom steel formwork, and precision lifts over a busy waterway, enhancing efficiency, safety, and build quality.

As Brisbane looks toward the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, BESIX Watpac is proud to have delivered a landmark that strengthens connectivity, sustainability, and civic pride for generations to come.
