State of the Art Learning Space for Brisbane Grammar School

The six-storey building will transform the rear of the campus into a dynamic new learning space connected to the main upper platform of the School.

The striking new precinct will include 15 co-laboratory spaces, 14 general learning areas, five design areas, art studios and a 300-seat open auditorium.

BESIX Watpac General Manager Queensland and the Northern Territory, Drew Brockhurst, said the company is honoured to have been selected.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Brisbane Grammar School, and it’s tremendous to be taking that relationship to a new level with such an exciting project.”

The new precinct is inspired by Brisbane Grammar School’s commitment to innovative practice and forward-thinking.

Brisbane Grammar School Headmaster Anthony Micallef said the STEAM Precinct is the most ambitious project in the School’s 153-year history.

“The STEAM Precinct will enhance the functionality of the campus, enable teachers and students to operate within a learning environment more conducive to 21st-century curriculum and pedagogy and provide a centre for innovation and community events,” he said.

“STEAM will be more than a new building. It will be a hub for ideas, innovation and educational and social interaction. Our vision is to replace our ageing Science classrooms with an environment that excites, engages and inspires both our students and their teachers and promotes deeper and richer learning.

“The acronym STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics – refers not just to these standalone disciplines but rather as a way of thinking,” Mr Micallef said.

Scheduled for completion in late 2022, the STEAM Precinct will generate significant stimulus for local subcontractors and suppliers with up to 170 people working on site.

The new building will be constructed on the site of existing facilities, including ageing classrooms, which will be demolished as part of the project.
