Significant construction milestone achieved at One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha
BESIX Watpac, in partnership with Christchurch City Council, has reached a significant milestone in the construction of One New Zealand Stadium at Te Kaha. The final steel modules are now in place, closing out the remarkable steel superstructure.

These final major pieces, two radial truss modules located at the northern end of the arena, stand 37 metres tall and weigh around 160 tonnes each, making them the heaviest lifts of the project.
These modules were lifted by a 1200t crawler crane, the largest of its kind in New Zealand, in combination with a 600t crawler crane.
“Installing these final modules closes out a significant phase of the project for the team. Every step of the roof installation process has been complex and presented its own challenges,” said Kent Summerfield, Christchurch City Council Project Director.
The roof structure comprises over 80 steel modules, each weighing at least 75 tonnes, with works commencing on the roof structure in December 2023.
“It’s fantastic to look back over the last fourteen months and recognize the work that BESIX Watpac and their subcontractors have done to make this happen,” added Mr. Summerfield.
Work on the exterior wall and roof cladding is progressing, an activity that commenced in late 2024 and will continue until Q3 2025.
Other works include the concrete seating plats, most of which are in place, with metalwork and handrail installation to commence shortly then the seating to follow.
The project team continues to deliver this remarkable project to the highest standard, maintaining the utmost safety and quality.
