Regional sporting initiative builds future leaders
Having an enduring legacy in the communities where we operate is an important part of the BESIX Watpac ethos.

This was most recently demonstrated through our role as Presenting Partner of She Hoops at the inaugural WNBL Townsville Tip-Off - an inspiring initiative founded by Olympic and WNBL champion Lauren Jackson AO OLY and driven by Australian Opals great Tess Madgen OLY.
BESIX Watpac CEO Mark Baker and General Manager – QLD, NT & NZ Wade Cummins attended the event, joining leaders from state and local government, the WNBL and NBL, and key community stakeholders.
“This partnership is a natural extension of our commitment to creating opportunities for local women and young people,” said Mr Baker.
“By supporting programs that grow female leadership – on the court, in classrooms, and on our construction sites – we’re investing in a more inclusive and empowered future.”
With a 100-year legacy in North Queensland and more than 70 projects delivered in the region – including Queensland Country Bank Stadium and transformative work at James Cook University – BESIX Watpac is deeply embedded in the region.

Mr Cummins said: “We believe sport is really important for the community, especially in regional areas. Bringing She Hoops to Townsville is something really special for us.”
She Hoops is more than basketball. It creates pathways for girls and women through clinics, leadership programs, and community engagement. It also supports First Nations leadership, led by Opals and WNBL standout Ally Wilson OLY.
Lauren Jackson AO OLY commented on the sponsorship: “They’ve given us the opportunity to come up and do it, and we wouldn’t have been able to run these camps or any of the workshops without the sponsorship.”
Our support for She Hoops reflects a broader commitment to regional Australia, where talent, resilience, and leadership are nurtured from the ground up.
As we look toward the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, initiatives like this are helping close the regional divide and inspire the next generation of champions.
