Major Milestone for St George Hospital Stage 3 Redevelopment
A significant milestone has been reached at the St George Hospital Stage 3 Redevelopment – a project being delivered by BESIX Watpac for Health Infrastructure, with the construction of the new nine-storey Kensington Street Building reaching its highest point.
This achievement was marked by a traditional 'topping out' ceremony attended by NSW Premier Chris Minns, Member for Rockdale Steve Kamper and BESIX Watpac Chief Executive Officer Mark Baker.
In keeping with construction tradition, a Blueberry Ash tree was lifted onto the roof of the new building. This tree, endemic to the local area, will be planted in the forecourt once works are completed.
BESIX Watpac General Manager NSW Giovanni Polimeni said the project has made excellent progress thanks to the ingenuity of the team and partnership with Health Infrastructure.
“Our experience in delivering major health projects has helped inform our strategic approach to design, working in and around a constrained site and altering methodologies and sequencing to ensure the project achieves an optimised result and operational performance. The proof is in the quality achieved to date,” he said.
The project is providing a significant boost to the local economy by directly supporting approximately 750 jobs, with the potential to support thousands more indirectly. Currently, up to 250 construction workers are on site daily.
Mr Polimeni also said the project has also been a vehicle to elevate skillsets within the team.
“BESIX Watpac is committed to advancing the careers of our people and our delivery of the St George Hospital Stage 3 Redevelopment has provided a platform for the team to grow as professionals in their field. The results we’ve achieved on the project thanks to our team speak for themselves."
The Kensington Street Building will consolidate community and outpatient care services under one roof. This includes the Rehabilitation Cognitive Transition Unit that will provide structured rehabilitation for patients with mild to moderate acquired brain injuries, enhancing cognitive recovery and transition planning post-treatment.
Additionally, the building will house a Behavioural Support Unit for managing complex age-related cognitive conditions such as dementia and delirium, catering to both clinical and behavioural needs. Construction of the new building is expected to be completed in late 2025, with the landscaping, including a new public forecourt and green spaces, and final refurbishment works to be completed in late 2026.
