Link bridge in place at new mental health facility
The link bridge connecting the new Secure Mental Health Rehabilitation Unit into the existing facility at the Gold Coast University Hospital has recently been lifted into place.

Spanning 27 meters and weighing 20 tonnes, the prefabricated bridge connects to the lower ground level of the SMHRU with the existing Acute Mental Health Building via a newly constructed walkway.
Constructed from a structural steel frame with a metal decking composite concrete slab, the bridge also features external glazing and steel stud walls clad in fibre cement. The roof is insulated PIR panels designed for durability and efficiency.
Extensive preparations were made to accommodate the new bridge on site. This included ensuring verticality of the steel structure prior to installing glazing as well as extensive investigations of the existing in ceiling services to coordinate the steel connections within the fabrication process.
Several complexities were encountered, particularly around the constrained nature of the positioning the crane within radius of the prefabrication area. This included coordinating the prefabrication process within a restricted space, as well as navigating around inground services within the operational radius of the 300T mobile crane.
The team expertly managed these complexities to ensure the lift was completed safely and successfully.
