JCU Technology Innovation Complex (TIC) officially underway
A traditional Indigenous smoking ceremony and an official sod turning have marked the formal beginning of construction of JCU's remarkable Technology Innovation Complex (TIC), proudly being delivered by BESIX Watpac.
The four-storey, 9,400 square metre TIC will be the centrepiece of an innovation hub at JCU's Bebegu Yumba campus in Townsville. TIC will encourage undergraduate and postgraduate engineering and IT students, industry partners and researchers to converge and collaborate.
JCU Chancellor Bill Tweddell did the honours turning the first sod and Bindal Elder Uncle Alfred Smallwood performed the traditional smoking ceremony.
It’s expected the TIC project will create about 300 construction jobs and more than 500 indirect jobs, with at least 80% of subcontractors and suppliers locally sourced. BESIX Watpac has established an Indigenous employment and training steering committee for the project to maximise opportunities for Indigenous employment and participation by local Indigenous-owned businesses.
