Brisbane Grammar School’s STEAM project officially underway
The latest chapter in the long and proud relationship between the prestigious Brisbane Grammar School and BESIX Watpac has officially commenced.
BGS Chairman, John Humphrey joined BESIX Watpac General Manager Queensland and the Northern Territory, Drew Brockhurst to turn the first sod on the innovative new STEAM Precinct for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.
Set against the backdrop of partially demolished ageing facilities that will make way for STEAM, John Humphrey noted the significance of the project in the School’s long and distinguished history.
“This ceremony is more than the beginning of a new building - it commences a new chapter in the BGS story - the start of the most significant capital project in the School’s history. The STEAM Precinct is a home for a new pedagogy and the integration of learning across Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics,” Mr Humphrey said.
Drew Brockhurst noted the history between BESIX Watpac and Brisbane Grammar School.
“Our association with BGS goes beyond bricks and mortar – our founding Managing Director David Little was a School Captain here and a passionate Old Boy. Our project association goes back nearly 30 years, commencing with the refurbishment of the heritage-listed Boarding House in 1993 and since then, we have partnered with BGS to complete many more exceptional projects.”
“STEAM takes our relationship with BGS to a new level and we are extremely proud to be delivering this new benchmark in the integration of learning,” Drew said.
The impressive four-storey, 14-thousand square metre building has been designed by BGS Old Boy and architect Hamilton Wilson.
The foundation stone for the School was laid on its present site in 1897 and John Humphrey noted that the pace of change experienced since then will only accelerate in future.
“This is a moment when we recognise our place in the long history of Brisbane Grammar School. Our actions today will equip BGS graduates with the skills they need to succeed in a world we cannot presently imagine,” Mr Humphrey said.
Scheduled for opening early in 2023, the STEAM Precinct will generate significant stimulus for local subcontractors and suppliers, with up to 170 people working on site.
"We are extremely proud to be delivering this new benchmark in the integration of learning."
