BESIX Watpac and architects Kirk Studio will deliver an innovative multi-storey timber headquarters expansion for highly successful Queensland-based defence industry company, NIOA.

The five-storey building will utilise environmentally sustainable Glued Laminated Timber (Glulam) and Cross Laminated Timber products with the timber structure playing a major role in the building’s aesthetic appeal and high level of quality and finish.

Kirk and BESIX Watpac have previously joined forces to deliver the University of Queensland’s Advanced Engineering Building which also utilised timber products.

Established in 1973, NIOA is the largest Australian‐owned supplier of weapons and munitions to the Australian Defence Force, the largest supplier of weapons and munitions to the Australian Law Enforcement market, and the largest wholesaler to licensed firearms dealers within the Sporting market. NIOA’s success has demanded additional office space immediately adjacent to its existing office facility at Brisbane Airport.

BESIX Watpac’s General Manager for Queensland and the Northern Territory, Drew Brockhurst said his team is very please to be awarded such a unique project for a great Queensland company.

“BESIX Watpac is excited to partner with NIOA and Kirk to deliver this innovative superior quality project within a sensitive secure operational environment,” Drew said.

BESIX Watpac has a comprehensive track record delivering secure facilities in live and highly secure environments for a range of clients including the ADF, Reserve Bank of Australia, and Corrective Services departments.
