BESIX Watpac celebrates the opening of Barangaroo Station
The official opening of the new Sydney Metro Barangaroo Station marked the first of many journeys forecast for more than 14,400 daily commuters while also showcasing and celebrating the efforts of BESIX Watpac’s diverse and expert-led workforce.
BESIX Watpac General Manager New South Wales Giovanni Polimeni said the project demonstrates BESIX Watpac’s market-leading ability to deliver large-scale and complex transport infrastructure projects.
“Barangaroo Station has been delivered in the spirit of collaboration and a deep-seated commitment to safety that demonstrates BESIX Watpac’s ability to coordinate with a diverse pool of stakeholders including government, regulators and the local community,” he said.
“Successfully delivering an important piece of public transport infrastructure of this scale and significance relies heavily on the skill of the team. I congratulate the BESIX Watpac team, our delivery partners and subcontractors on achieving an outstanding result.”
During its construction, the Barangaroo Station team hosted a royal visit, fostered the career beginnings of many construction professionals and is recognised for its innovative approach to ensuring workplace health and safety.
BESIX Watpac Operations Manager for New South Wales Luke Hunter said the project has exemplified our team’s expertise in not only delivering a complex piece of public transport infrastructure but also ensuring there is an enduring tangible cultural legacy.
“Our team delivered strong outcomes for local subcontractors and Indigenous workers resulting in more than 134 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people employed on the project while a further 163 apprentices and trainees had the opportunity to start their careers on a memorable project,” he said.
“The proactive safety culture driven by the BESIX Watpac team has also led to the project’s nomination for a Workplace Health and Safety Award with Master Builders.”
BESIX Watpac's scope of works on the project includes the installation of platforms, lifts and escalators, northern entrance, Hickson Road precinct works including road, footpath, cycleway, landscaping, street lighting, utilities and ventilation pod risers.
SAPOL Mounted Units moves into new home
BESIX Watpac has completed Stage 1 of the Gepps Cross project for South Australia Police (SAPOL) and the Mounted Operations Unit has now moved into the state-of-the-art facility.
Construction begins on a military aircraft hangar in SA
Works have commenced on the Deep Maintenance and Modification Facility adjacent the Royal Australian Air Force Edinburgh base in northern Adelaide.
