Barangaroo Station Project Update
Located in the heart of Sydney, Barangaroo Station will be one of the flagship destinations of the city’s new metro rail line.

Located in the heart of Sydney, Barangaroo Station will be one of the flagship destinations of the city’s new metro rail line and is part of Australia’s biggest public transport project.
BESIX Watpac commenced construction on Sydney Metro Barangaroo Station in October 2021 and has been fully mobilised on site since November 2021.
The $217 million project is 350m long, 25m underground over six levels, and is currently on track to meet delivery and client milestones despite unprecedented rainfall since construction commencement in October 2021 (101 days with more than 5mm).
The Barangaroo Station team achieved an early handover of track area to Systems Connect (Portion 1B) in April 2022 and has installed seven of the 10 escalators, two of the five lifts and all station platforms.
In July 2022, traffic on the busy Hickson Road was shifted to the temporary new road alignment to the east of the previous road, to allow for construction of the new permanent road alignment and the tunnel and station ventilation pods to be completed. The realignment will be in place for around eight months before the road is shifted again to its final position.
Current activity onsite includes fit out the new station, with work to install front-of-house finishes, plant rooms, services, escalators and lifts underway. At a surface level we are constructing stormwater pits and ventilation pods and preparing the area for the road and public domain works.
Upcoming milestones include installation of platform screen doors and the northern entry canopy in October, HV energization in November, and commissioning of lifts and escalators early 2023.
To date the team has installed more than 415 tonnes of structural steel, laid 166,000 blocks and installed 6km of cable containment. The average daily workforce is approaching its peak, with 200 workers onsite most days, and training and development in full swing.
Barangaroo Station, is being delivered collaboratively with Sydney Metro and BESIX Watpac, with BESIX Watpac leading the complex interface with the two main corridor contracting parties (Systems Connect Line Wide Works and MTR TSOM) to complete the fit-out and commissioning of the new station.

Barangaroo Station project recently ran a successful pre-employment program to attract new people to the industry and has several other initiatives in place to encourage workforce diversity and participation, including university tours, celebrating culturally significant days such as NAIDOC Week, International Women’s Day and R U Ok? Day.
NSW General Manager Peter Furlong said that BESIX Watpac had a good track record in social impact and local employment. Together with Sydney Metro, the company set key employment and engagement targets for this project during the tender phase.
“As a significant landmark project for Sydney, we understand our responsibility to create a positive social legacy with this project, and I’m very pleased to say we are currently meeting and exceeding these targets,” Mr Furlong said.
“Thanks to the commitment from our team, Barangaroo Station is aiming to set a new benchmark for diversity in our workforce – we currently have had more than 68 women working on the project in non-traditional roles, a further 77 Indigenous workers and 264 people under the age of 24.”
The Barangaroo Station Project issues monthly updates and weekly emails. If you would like to keep up to date with construction progress, please contact barangaroometrostation@transport.nsw.gov.au
