The third stage of the $740 million St George Hospital Redevelopment will soon be underway, with main works to begin within weeks.
Health Minister Brad Hazzard, together with Member for Oatley Mark Coure, visited the site to mark the major milestone.
“This is a very exciting day for the St George community, with construction about to begin on the $411 million Integrated Ambulatory Care Precinct, the third stage of this significant redevelopment,” Mr Hazzard said.
“The new Ambulatory Care Building will be a one-stop-stop for community and out-of-hospital services, bringing together a range of new, enhanced and existing health services into the one location, right next to the St George Hospital campus.”
Mr Coure said BESIX Watpac was awarded the construction contract to deliver the new building and car parking following a competitive tender process.
“The new facility will meet the health needs of the St George and Sutherland community now and into the future by providing more accessible care for patients, ultimately improving health outcomes,” Mr Coure said.
“The redevelopment will also provide additional inpatient beds, including a specialty Aged Care Unit and a new Acute Brain Injury Unit.”
BESIX Watpac CEO, Mark Baker said it’s the seventh project the company has delivered for Health Infrastructure since 2014.
"This is a complex, live-environment project and we look forward to working closely with Health Infrastructure again to deliver this critical asset in metropolitan St George," he said.
The Stage 3 St George Hospital redevelopment will include:
• Outpatient, ambulatory and integrated care services
• Pathology specimen collection
• New day rehabilitation unit
• Increased sub-acute and rehabilitation inpatient beds
• Sub-acute aged care unit
• Behavioural management unit
• Acquired brain injury unit
• Palliative care
• Surgical services with refurbished operating theatres
• Enhanced diagnostic imaging (medical imaging and nuclear medicine)
• New Clinical Skills Centre
In addition to the new Ambulatory Care Building, a new public forecourt and green spaces will provide a welcoming environment that supports patient well-being.
The Stage 3 Redevelopment will complement the previously completed Emergency Department, eight-level Acute Services Building and upgraded Birthing Suite and Operating Theatre redevelopment.
Other Health Infrastructure projects delivered by BESIX Watpac include Hornsby-Ku-ring-gai Hospital Stage 2 Redevelopment, the Forensic Medicine & Coroners Court and the Port Macquarie Base Hospital Expansion.
