#Overview
At the end of December 2016, BESIX delivered the largest multimodal station in the Netherlands: OVT Utrecht. As the construction of this key hub was influenced by many environmental factors and various stakeholders, the works were planned in six phases. The terminus station is the biggest train terminal in the country offering maximum comfort to all commuters. A brand-new bicycle park with 4,500 storage slots was also delivered as part of the project.

Minimising interruptions and maximising results
Maintaining operations
With more than 230,000 commuters using the terminal each day, the project’s biggest challenge was to keep the train station and shopping facilities operational at all times. Meticulous planning and regular communication were undertaken with stakeholders to ensure that our client was satisfied at every step. This approach helped our team to find the perfect workflow and allowed for adaptability in a challenging live environment that resulted in minimal disruption to the busy terminal’s operations. The upgrade has increased the terminal’s capacity to accommodate the extra 75,000 passengers per day anticipated over the next decade.
Trusted experience
BESIX’s extensive experience in rail and environmental management was invaluable in determining the best approach for this project. The works included various demolition activities, execution of railway tracks, and modifications to the existing station’s shell concrete structure, as well as the building of a brand-new station. This new precinct includes shopping spaces, an access road and part of the nearby Katreinetoren high-rise to create space for the new station and ancillary buildings. BESIX supplied and installed escalators, lifts and façade maintenance equipment. The expanded terminal now has the capacity to support significant growth in passenger numbers taking the total to more than 100 million a year.
“The side of the hallway along with the floor and the many commercial spaces were built in one phase. In addition, the steel structure, the columns, and the major beams were all made and transported from Spain. We’ve brought all the material to Utrecht by trucks. Our teams worked day and night to get it ready in time. In my opinion, the hall is a real masterpiece.”
