Celebrating the grand opening of a Brisbane icon
Works on the remarkable Kangaroo Point Bridge, a project delivered by the BESIX Watpac-led Connect Brisbane consortium for Brisbane City Council, have reached completion with the milestone marked by an official opening on Sunday 15 December.
BESIX Watpac Chief Executive Officer Mark Baker joined Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Councillor Ryan Murphy, Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government The Hon Catherine King and senior leaders of the consortium members to celebrate with the local community.
The bridge is the latest project in the company’s proud portfolio of work delivered in Brisbane. Since the 1980’s, BESIX Watpac has consistently contributed to the city’s skyline having built numerous structures from stadiums and hospitals and health infrastructure to educational facilities and high-rise buildings.
BESIX Watpac takes immense pride in having collaborated with Council and our consortium partners to bring this new landmark to life. This milestone would also not have been possible without the dedication and hard work of our 80+ subcontractors, many local to South East Queensland.
The project was also a fantastic learning opportunity for the up-and-coming construction workforce with many apprentices and graduates employed, and students engaged throughout delivery.
Some project highlights:
- 82 subcontractors engaged
- 1,811 workers inducted
- 759,719 construction hours completed
- 33 First Nations people employed
- 64 apprentices employed
- 14 graduates employed
