The level 7 basement slab went down in late 2020 and work is currently underway on the level 6 suspended slab, walls and columns. The basement presented a challenge as it reaches below the prevailing water table requiring a variety of mitigation measures to overcome water ingress. The major mitigation device is a 25 metres deep grout curtain, the largest and most complex curtain if its type ever installed in Victoria.

The project is effectively two projects in one with the new Saint Teresa of Kolkata building interacting closely with the existing heritage listed Mary Glowrey Building, which will also be upgraded. The new structure includes three levels which will overbuild the existing structure.

In all, the $206 million, 13 storey project will deliver 2 hectares of new education and research floor space.

Delivering this remarkable project in the live environment of an operating university presents a variety of logistical challenges which are carefully managed through meticulous methodology planning. Live environment construction in sectors from education to airports and hospitals is a key feature of BESIX Watpac’s unique complex project capability.
